Features Overview

Display Restrict Password

In older versions of 1000PassPlus setting up a password to restrict access to the display was not a difficult task but it also wasn’t very user friendly mainly because the method was not standard among MS Windows applications; it could not be accessed through the menus ether.
This feature was fixed in iPass+2010 and it is now just a click away.

Locking and Unlocking the Display

Once the password is set, it requires only one click to hide the display and lock functionality without hiding the application.

Main Password Reset

Just as easy is resetting/deleting the main password.

User declared home path for databases

This allows you to declare the folder were you want to store your databases. By declaring this yourself it will be easier to move them to a new storage device or to make a back up if you ever need to do it. For example when upgrading your computer, replacing the hard drive or just making a back up on a different storage media.

Password Generator improvements

Password generator generates a sequence of characters according to preferences selected. In this new release you can add numbers and control the amount added. You can also add punctuation and control the amount of characters used for that matter. You can also shuffle the characters.

Search by Date

1000PassPlus recorded the date and time an entry was added to the database. Now in this release a date search function is added so it becomes easier than ever finding an entry. This is a great improvement for large databases.

Revamped Interface

Buttons were added, menus were relocated and the toolbar was moved to make the interface more user friendly still simple and uncluttered.

iPass+2010 Operation Instructions

First Run

Databases Home Path

Where there is not an order in which the program has to be used it is highly recommended that the first thing you do the first time you use it is to set up a home directory for your databases.  If you don’t chose one the program will use the folder where the program was installed.
Invoking the About item in the menu will display the databases location among other important information.

Setting the home folder is a configuration item that can be done only once. This means that once you’ve set up the folder, the option to set up the folder will disappear from the menu. So make sure you set up the correct location at once.

It is important for you to know where your databases are specially when you have to move your data to a new computer or when replacing hard drive or just for back-up purposes. It is also important and highly recommended to back up your databases from time to time as it is any other important data you may have stored in the computer.

Data Base Import

If you were a user of 1000PasswordsPlus you will need to bring your databases to the location where you declared them to reside in iPass+2010.
iPass+2010 is fully compatible with 1000PasswordsPlus data base format.

Data Base Set Up

iPass+2010 comes with seven databases files previously created and they are ready to be filled in when the program runs the first time. These databases are named for standard use. They are Email, website, forum, subscriptions, work and personal.
You can take advantage of these already named databases to store your data under those categories or you can use only one database for all your entries. It is entirely your call.
Databases cannot be deleted from the program but they can be taken out of commission. You can also add new databases and name them as you wish. This is done on the Data Base management screen. You can also select the default data base. This is the database that will be selected every time iPass+2010 starts.

Currently Selected Data Base

Whenever you select a different database, the name of the selected database will show in the front display.

Password Generator

You can use this tool to create a password instead of making one up yourself.
There are many benefits for using this tool such as passwords are randomly generated. This makes a hacker job more difficult because he will never “guess” the correct word.
The tool let you define the length of the word, whether you want to use caps, lowercases or both. You can also define how many numbers should be used and also how many punctuation symbols if any.
You can change the order of the letters by pressing the shuffle button. You could also type your own word on the password box and make the tool shuffle it. You can use this technique if you rather use a single word arranged in different ways for each password.
Finished password can be loaded to the clipboard just by selecting this option. This will save you from selecting the text and pressing ctrl-c, or can be exported to the password field on iPass+2010 main screen by selecting export.

Main Display

Text Fields

Service Field:

Type in this field the name of the service where the password is assigned.

User Name Field:

This field is for the name of the user. This is the name you use to log in the service. In some sites this is your email address.

Password Field:

Here is where you insert the password for the service. Marking out the checkmark will reveal the word representation of the password. To hide it from view and make the asterisks show check mark the box.

Address Field:

Use this field to enter the address to the login screen. This field becomes a hyperlink when a URL is detected.

Comments Field:

Use this field to enter whatever information you feel relevant. For example additional data required for the site or information you have supplied at sign-up, etc.

Toolbar Buttons

Arranged from left to right buttons are as follow:

Add Button:

Use this to add an entry to the currently selected database.

Remove Button

Use this button to remove the currently selected entry from the database. Removal is immediate but data from that entry is moved to their respective text fields.

Replace Button:

Use this button to re insert corrected information from an entry.

Blank Button:

Use this button to clear all text fields.

Note: You can add to the database more than one entry with exactly the same information but it will be record with a different date/time. This is useful for having more than one account with a service.  Having said so you must ensure that there is no two entries for the same site but with same user and different password. This is why it is important to use the Replace button instead of the Add button when you change a password and need to take note of it.

Key button:

This button is outside of the toolbar and is used to assign a password for the screen and to lock/unlock the screen.
In order to protect your iPass+2010 screen when you are away from the computer it is a good idea to set a password. This password will always be active even after restarting the program. This will also protect your databases so they cannot be opened in another computer running iPass+ without the correct unlocking password.
Press this button once. If there is no password assigned you will be prompted to create one. If there was a password already created the screen will lock important functions and hide the database display. If the screen was locked a prompt will ask for the password to return screen display to normal.

Search by Date:

Search by date is done with the pull down menu shown next to the key button.
This menu shows all date/time pairs for each entry of the selected database.
Pull down the menu by the arrow to visually find the date then select the entry and the correct service/user/password fields will be filled up on each field.
You can also type a date on the text field and iPass will search the current database for a match. Press F3 to search for another match.
Formats accepted for search tool are:

YYYYMMDD, YYY-MM-DD, YYY/MM/DD and YYY - MM – DD

Month / Day button:

The button to the right of the search tool is used to switch the month and day positions on the list. This makes the date appear as YYYY – MM – DD or YYYY – DD – MM.

Triple asterisk symbol button:

This button invokes the Suggest a Password tool.

Password checkmark box

Check to show password hidden with asterisks, uncheck to show password as text

Minimize button

When iPass+ is minimized it will stay on the system tray. To open it again, just click the key icon.
iPass+ will not auto protect itself when sent to the tray. It will remain in the last used status unless you have set it the Auto Protect mode on the configuration menu.

Auto Protect

This command sets iPass+ to enter locked mode at any of the following conditions

  • When minimized
  • When idle for 10 minutes.

Auto Protect can only be set if there is a password to unlock the screen already assigned.

Changing the databases home directory

If you just run iPass and still no data was stored on the screen do as follows:

  • Select Set Origin from the File menu and point it to the new path where you want your databases.

If you were using iPass for a while and you want to change the path were your databases are kept do as follows:

  • If you don't know where the databases are select About from the Help menu.
'default location' means the path where iPass+ is installed.
'protected' means screen and databases are currently password protected.
If it says different then that is the path where the databases are.
  • Exit iPass+
  • Copy the database files to the new location. (db1.ppd, db2.ppd, etc.) or (cx1.cx, cx2.cx, etc.)
  • Copy the dbs.lst file (do not delete it afterwards)
  • Delete the database files from the old location.
  • Run iPass+
  • Unlock iPass+ if it was locked.
  • Select Set Origin from the File menu and point it to the new path where you stored the database files.
  • Lock iPass+ if it was previously locked. Leave it as is if it was not.
  • Unlock iPass+ if you just locked it.

If database index file is missing from your custom database folder you'll receive warning messages. iPass+ will try to reconstruct this file when you change the databases path.

Troubleshooting

Problem: I added a database and the name do not show on the selection menu.

Solution:  Close iPass+2010 and restart it.

Problem: I’ve double clicked one of the databases on windows explorer and an error message appeared.

Solution: For your protection iPass+2010 databases are not declared to Windows shell. Databases can only be opened with iPass+ and it predecessors.

Problem: The databases are gone.

Solution: If you deleted the databases and they are not in the recycler bin then you are out of luck unless you try to recover them with file recovery software.
If this is not the case but databases appear to be gone try running iPass+ and see if the program find them for you. When iPass+ is in locked mode all databases are transformed to a protected mode but they come back to normal when you unlock the display.
